Work experience with Link-Ed (09/01/2009)

By Luke Moore

When I first walked into the office on my first day as Marketing Assistant, my nerves were pushed aside at how relaxed the atmosphere was. My supervisor, Katrina, gave me a desk and a quick briefing on the companys recent, and up-coming events. Then I was given the freedom to do whatever I thought I should do, just as a real Marketing Assistant would, so I thought of some ways by which to promote the company at the Diploma Roadshow in February. These included updated business cards, and a PowerPoint Presentation informing audiences of who Link-Ed are, and what we do. I completed these tasks in two days, and pitched the ideas to the Interim Consortium Director. He was impressed, and helped me improve further, before getting a quote for the business cards. I then searched for an effective promotional giveaway for the company. Initial ideas were pencils, and rubbers, but it was agreed that they would just be chucked in a draw. We needed something that would effectively promote Link-Ed...

The new Link-Ed website would soon be up and running, so I was tasked with thinking of improvements, and new ideas for the website. I immediately started looking at websites of companies similar to Link-Ed, and evaluated their websites, using the information to improve our one.

On my work experience placement, I learnt what a real working environment is like, and to use my initiative to think up new ideas for myself. Katrina and Lucy were really helpful, and treated me just the same as they would a new member of staff. I would not have benefited from my placement if I was treated like a child, as I would not have been experiencing a real working environment. I enjoyed my placement quite a lot, however I personally would get bored if I was in a permanent placement in an office, as I like to be outdoors, and doing new things every day. But as I say, that's my personal opinion; other students might enjoy it more.
